How do I backup my Hyper-V virtual machine(s)?

To backup your Hyper-V virtual machine(s),

  1. Login to the IBackup application and click the Server Backup tab.
  2. In the Hyper-V Backup section, click Backup.
  1. Select the Local Backup + Cloud Backup or the Local Backup Only radio button.
  2. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list and specify a temporary path for the local backup.
  3. Click Schedule Now.
  1. The 'Schedule backup' screen is displayed where you can schedule the backup for any future day and time or perform an immediate backup of the selected virtual machine(s).

Does IBackup support incremental backups for Hyper-V virtual machines?

Yes, for Hyper-V configuration version 8.0 or later, IBackup supports incremental backups after the initial full backup. This ensures optimal use of Internet bandwidth and storage space.

Can I backup Hyper-V virtual machines to a network mapped drive or NAS drive?

Yes, you can backup Hyper-V virtual machines to a network mapped drive or NAS drive. While choosing a local backup path, select the network mapped drive / NAS drive and provide the necessary authentication.

To backup your Hyper-V virtual machine(s) to a network mapped / NAS drive,

  1. Login to the IBackup application and click the Server Backup tab.
  2. In the Hyper-V Backup section, click Backup.
  1. Select the Local Backup + Cloud Backup or the Local Backup Only radio button.
  2. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list.
  3. Select the network mapped drive / NAS drive as the location for creating the disk image and click Schedule Now.
  1. Enter your username and password to authenticate network mapped drive / NAS drive and click Authenticate.
  2. The Schedule backup screen appears where you can schedule the backup for any future day and time or perform an immediate backup of the selected virtual machine(s).

What are the system requirements for IBackup Hyper-V Backup?

The system requirements for IBackup Hyper-V Backup are,

  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2
  • Windows 2008, Windows 2012, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Sufficient hard disk space to store the virtual machine files for temporary backup and restore

Should I turn off or shutdown the Virtual machine(s) in Hyper-V manager to take a backup?

No. You do not have to shut down your active virtual machine(s) to perform a backup. IBackup enables you to backup virtual machine(s) in their Running state.

Is the data transferred during backup/restore process using IBackup Hyper-V Backup secure?

Yes. IBackup uses military grade 256-bit AES encryption to encrypt all data transferred during a backup/restore operation using IBackup Hyper-V Backup feature.

How can I restore virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V Server?

To restore a virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V Server,

  1. Login to the IBackup application and click the Restore tab.
  2. Locate and select the 'IBHyperVData' folder in your IBackup account.
  3. Click Restore Now to restore the 'IBHyperVData' folder to the local computer.
  4. Once the 'IBHyperVData' folder has been successfully restored, click the Server Backup tab.
  5. In the Hyper-V section, click Restore.
  1. Browse and select the 'IBHyperVData' folder from your local computer (the location where the 'IBHyperVData' folder was restored earlier from your IBackup account).
  2. Select the virtual machine(s) you want to restore to your Hyper-V server.
  3. Click Restore Now to restore the virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V server.
  1. Click Yes, in the confirmation window to commence Hyper-V restore.

Can I restore Hyper-V virtual machines from a network mapped drive or NAS drive?

Yes, you can restore Hyper-V virtual machines from a local path using IBackup, including network mapped and NAS drives.

To restore the virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V server from a network mapped drive or NAS,

  1. Go to the Server Backup tab of IBackup application.
  2. In the Hyper-V section, click Restore.
  1. Browse and select the 'IBHyperVData' folder saved in your network mapped / NAS drive.
  2. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list, which you want to restore to your VMware server.
  3. Click Restore Now.
  1. Click Yes, in the confirmation window.
  2. Provide network drive authentication details and click Authenticate.
  1. Hyper-V restore will commence after successful authentication.
